Windsurf Bicycle Warehouse in South San Francisco went from a thriving, legitimate retail giant to a hollowed-out, cash-heavy front for a subterranean drug pipeline before its ultimate collapse.
At its peak, the warehouse was a massive success, serving as the largest Trek, Burton, and Nash kite-and-windsurfing dealer in North America. It pulled in a passionate crowd of windsurfers, snowboarders, and mountain bikers chasing the high-adrenaline rush of the Bay. The shop was run by partners CK and Big Al, operating initially like any normal specialty retail business with boards on the walls and bikes in the stands.
However, the warehouse suffered a slow, internal drift that quietly shifted its incentives from serving retail customers to serving an illicit side operation. The downfall was driven by several key factors:
Ultimately, this combination of "easy money" and the wrong crowd killed the business from within faster than any competitor could. By the time the shift was obvious, the Windsurf Bicycle Warehouse had stopped being the business it started as. The entire scene—and the illicit trade accompanying it—eventually abandoned the warehouse and drifted down to 3rd Ave (Bay Winds Park) in Foster City and San Mateo, leaving the South San Francisco location behind as a memory.
